A flashcard system for MDCAT

MDCAT is, to an unusual degree, a recall exam. A very large share of the paper asks whether you know a specific fact from the prescribed textbooks — precisely, and fast enough to leave time for the questions that need thinking. Spaced repetition is the best-evidenced tool for that job, and almost nobody preparing for this exam uses it, because building the decks by hand takes longer than anyone has.

Why this exam suits flashcards particularly well

Most competitive exams reward a mix of reasoning and recall. MDCAT leans hard toward the recall side: the questions are drawn from a defined syllabus based on the HSSC/FSc textbooks, and the difficulty comes from breadth and precision rather than from conceptual depth. Biology in particular is a very large set of discrete facts that you either have or don't.

That is the ideal shape for spaced repetition. The material is finite, testable in one line, and needs to survive months of preparation without decaying — which is the exact problem expanding review intervals solve.

Check the current notification first

The conducting body, the format and the subject weighting for MDCAT have changed several times in recent years. Before you plan anything, get the official notification for yoursession and build your card allocation from its weighting. Nothing below depends on a specific year's format, but where you spend your reviews should.

What to card, subject by subject

Biology

This is where flashcards pay for themselves. Card the definitions, the classifications, the named processes and their stages, the structures and their functions, the enzymes, the hormones and what they do, the exceptions the textbook bothers to mention. If a sentence in the textbook contains a name and a job, it's a card.

Chemistry

Card the properties, trends, named reactions, functional group behaviour, and the values you're expected to know. Do not card mechanisms you need to be able to work through — practise those on paper. Organic chemistry in particular splits cleanly: the facts are cards, the mechanisms are problems.

Physics

The weakest fit of the three, and worth saying so. Card formulas, units, constants, definitions, and the conditions under which a law applies. Numerical problem-solving is not a flashcard activity — it's the thing you do with the time flashcards save you.

English and logical reasoning

Vocabulary and grammar rules card well. Reasoning does not; that improves with practice questions and nothing else.

Building the decks without typing them

The realistic workflow, given that you're also attending classes and doing MCQs:

  1. One chapter at a time. Import the chapter PDF, or photograph the pages if you only have the printed book. Chapter-sized sources produce specific cards; whole-book imports produce vague ones.
  2. Prune hard. Expect to delete a third. Anything outside the syllabus, anything you already know cold, anything whose answer runs to a paragraph.
  3. Add past-paper facts by hand.When a past MCQ tests something your deck missed, that's the highest-value card you'll write all week. Write it yourself, immediately.
  4. Review daily, in the gaps.Fifteen minutes on the way to the academy. Reviewing needs no connection, so signal doesn't matter.

What flashcards will not do for you

They will not teach you to manage the clock, and MDCAT is as much a speed test as a knowledge test. They will not build the pattern recognition that comes from doing hundreds of past MCQs. And they will not fix a chapter you never understood — carding material you don't follow produces a deck you fail every day.

The split that works: flashcards for retention, past papers for exam skill, textbook reading for understanding. Cards are the cheapest of the three in time per unit of benefit, which is why they belong in the gaps rather than in your study blocks.

Why you won't find a ready-made MDCAT deck

Search for shared decks and you'll find thousands for the MCAT, the USMLE and A-Levels, and essentially nothing for MDCAT. The community that builds and refines shared decks formed around North American and British exams; it never formed here.

That's frustrating and it's also the reason generating from your own textbook matters more for this exam than for almost any other. There is no shortcut deck to download — but there's no reason building your own should take a month either.

Are flashcards useful for MDCAT preparation?
